Q: Do I have to remove all of my clothing during my massage?

A: No. Massage Therapists can provide treatment whether you elect to remove any, some or all of your clothing. All RMTs are trained in proper draping procedures to ensure that your privacy is completely respected at all times during treatment. Your comfort and ability to relax is paramount to effective treatment. Registered Massage Therapists will also describe the treatments to be provided to ensure that you are comfortable with them. Your consent is sought before treatment is provided. Your RMT wants you to let them know immediately if you are uncomfortable with any of the techniques, pressure, draping, etc.

Q: Does massage therapy hurt?

A: As with many treatments affecting the soft tissue, there are times when massage therapy can cause some light discomfort. Discomfort usually diminishes and no technique of this nature is used without the therapist first discussing it with the client and obtaining your permission. A comfort scale will be established and the therapist will work to the client's tolerance level. The client has the right to stop or change the treatment at any time and massage therapists will modify their techniques to meet the clients preference. The key is that you should always feel able to relax under your RMT's hands.

Q: What happens on my first visit?

A: On your first visit, you will complete a confidential health history as part of your assessment. This is important as the Massage Therapist needs to know if you have any medical conditions or are taking any medications. This health history will be updated on a yearly basis. The massage therapist will listen to your concerns, assess your individual needs as well as other factors that may be contributing to your injury (lifestyle, work, etc.). Your RMT will then develop a treatment plan with you to ensure that you receive appropriate treatment that will help you to reach your goals.

Q: Will my massage therapist keep my information private?

A: As regulated health professionals, Massage Therapists are required as a part of the standards set by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario to safely maintain the information you provide, both verbally and in written form, in the strictest of confidence. Information that is collected from clients must be secured and maintained according to PHIPA standards and only disclosed with the consent of the client.

Q: How often should I have massage therapy?

A: This is something that is very individualized. In cases of acute conditions, generally it can be beneficial to come in on a more frequent basis until symptoms start to decrease, at which this point appointments can be spaced further away from each other or discontinued if no longer required. For those who would like to come in on a regular basis to maintain, this can vary from weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly appointments depending on your lifestyle. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to book just before the discomfort starts to return. Example: if you are experiencing discomfort again approximately 5 weeks after your last massage appointment, it generally is a good idea to pre-book just before you start to feel pain again (in this case, approximately 4 weeks after your last appointment). This allows for a more preventative approach. Depending on lifestyle changes, this may need to be adjusted again. Your body always knows best, so make sure to listen to it!

Q: Can anyone receive massage therapy?

A: Yes. Massage therapy is appropriate for individuals of all ages from birth to elderly. However, there are some conditions that may contraindicate certain massage therapy techniques. Your RMT is trained to recognize these cases in which treatment may need to be modified, or avoided entirely to ensure your safety. If you are curious to know if massage therapy is right for you specifically, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I would love to answer any questions that you may have.
